Utilisations
Anticoagulant: SPS was originally developed as an anticoagulant to inhibit blood coagulation in vitro. Diagnostic Reagent: SPS can be used as a diagnostic reagent to encourage the growth of pathogens in the blood and increase the positive rate of blood culture results.
Anticomplement Effect: SPS has anticomplement effects, inhibiting complement activation and reducing the bactericidal effect of blood.
Surfactant: SPS has important applications in the preparation of detergents, soaps, cleansers, and foaming agents.
Metal Corrosion Inhibitor: SPS can be used as a metal corrosion inhibitor.
Colloid Solution Stabilizer: SPS can be used to stabilize colloidal solutions such as milk and gelatin.
Use in Blood Cultures
Neutralizes Antibiotics: SPS can neutralize trace amounts of antibiotics in the blood, increasing the positive rate of blood culture results.
Inhibits Lysozyme and Phagocytosis: SPS can inhibit lysozyme activity, inhibit phagocytosis, and inactivate some aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Inhibits Complement Cascade: SPS can inhibit some complement cascades, promoting better microbial growth. Anticoagulant Effect: SPS inhibits the activities of serine proteases, thrombin, and activating factor (FXa), essential for the coagulation process, by increasing the activity of antithrombin III (ATIII).
Sodium polyanethole sulfonate (SPS) is an important compound widely used in blood culture, anticoagulation, anticomplement, and surfactant applications. It is particularly effective in blood cultures, neutralizing antibiotics, inhibiting lysozyme and phagocytosis, and improving the positive detection rate. However, caution should be exercised regarding its hygroscopicity and potential irritation to skin and eyes, and appropriate safety precautions should be taken when using it.
